Adding numbers to graphs allows for easier and quicker comprehension

The Pew Research Center publishes data graphics with nearly every post, and they are typically very insightful. For separate stories that deal with social media growth over the past few years, the site used a bar graph and a line graph.

The bar graph, though, is much easier to understand as it includes the value above each bar. It is designed to be a comparison year by year and for each social media site, it is very easy to see the growth.

By comparison, the line graph only lists the values in 2005 and 2013. While you can determine the values for the other years by examining the graph closely and tracing the line to both axis, that is very time consuming. For this reason, these two graphs on a similar topic show why adding the values can be so helpful for the reader’s easy and quick comprehension.
