Experts Say That Screening Mental Health in Kindergarten Is Way Too Late

Rahil Briggs works at the Healthy Steps program at the Montefiore Comprehensive Health Care Center in the South Bronx. She screens children as young as 6 months for mental health issues. Experts say that waiting until kindergarten too screen mental health is too late, believing that it's important to catch the first signs that something may be wrong. Briggs states that half of all children with mental illness show symptoms before they turn 14. Certain things like divorce, neighborhood violence and poverty can interfere with learning. The best place to spot the warning signs of mental illness is in a pediatrician's office. Focusing on the starting point on mental illness is really important because if we can predict it we can prevent it.
